In rural Sichuan Province, teachers had no opportunity to leave their remote villages for training, especially in the regions hardest hit by the earthquake in 2008. These teachers were often required to teach a variety of subjects to as many as 500 students of different educational levels. There was a great need to provide additional training to these hard-working teachers so they could better serve the children.
In the past, the Chinese government had sponsored 20-25 teachers for one year for further intensive training and development in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province. About 1 in every 300 teachers who applied for entrance into these valuable training programs was accepted. Consequently, rural teachers without sophisticated skills and the ability to submit superior applications were not accepted. GCI has committed to sponsoring at least two teachers every year.
